Back of the Closet Find and an Emmy Rant

Sorry for the late post today guys. I spent my morning blogging hour cheering and jeering (though mostly jeering) the Emmy nominations that were announced this morning. If you’ve ever seen my personal twitter feed, you know that I’m a tv-holic, so it’s no surprise that I have very strong opinions about the nominations. I’m super psyched about the Homeland noms, although I think their only winner will be Claire Danes, and I’m OVER THE MOON for the Max Greenfield nom for New Girl, though he’ll most likely lose. Seriously guys — Schmidt is the best new character of 2012.  Also, I’m accustomed to sci-fi getting snubbed since BtVS but seriously, how could the Emmy voters possibly ignore the awesomeness of John Noble in Fringe this season — or every other season.  And I won’t even get into the snubbing of John Slattery for Mad Men, Emmy Rossum for Shameless, Joel McHale and the rest of the Community team, and Madeline Stowe and the Revenge folks.  Sigh. Okay, rant over.
Now lets get into today’s outfit.  In an effort to force my self to get creative (and save some money), I’ve reduced my spending budget for clothing.  So, I pulled out this skirt, that’s been sitting in the back of my closet, for 4 years, never worn.  At first I thought it would be boring worn with black but the pattern of the skirt is so bold I think the black balances it out.  What do you think?  I’m pretty embarrassed to admit that this was sitting in my closet for so long, with tags on it just collecting dust.  What’s the oldest item with tags hanging in your closet right now?

There Are Three Flowers in a Vase

The third flower is yellow.

Kudos to you if you recognized the quote above from the short-lived and brilliant Joss Whedon series, Dollhouse.  You may also know Joss Whedon as the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and the director of this year’s summer blockbuster, The Avengers.  My Whedon fangirling aside, the purpose of the quote was to get you in a floral state of mind.  As I’m sure you’ve noticed, floral prints have been a huge trend this season (see Diana in a floral skirt here, floral jeans here and here and Catalina in a floral dress here) and it looks like the trend is going to continue into the fall.  So if you haven’t picked up any floral yet, you still have time to get on board with the trend.  Here are a few suggestions:

For Work
Dorothy Perkins | $49

For Play
Paige @ Zappos | $91.99 (on sale)

On Your Feet
ASOS | $18.23 (on sale)

On your Arm

I searched high and low and couldn’t find the origin of this clutch — let me know if you find it!

Around Your Neck
Zara | $19.99 (on sale)

On Your Wall

On Your Floor
Anthropologie | $98 – $1,598

What’s your take on florals this season? Post links in the comments! Are you looking forward to the fall take on this trend?

Wear to the Office : Semi-Monochromatic

Hopping off my sisters idea from yesterday, I also decided to do a monochromatic look today, well semi-monochromatic anyway.  The color – cream.  The twist here is that the lace skirt has a coral underlay but I kept everything else neutral.  And perfect timing too because it is scorching out there and I want to keep my outfits as light as possible.  What do you think? Wear to the Office – Color block

I decided to be a bit daring this morning and put on a lot of color.  I did get a few weird looks, but I’m just hoping it was because I was having a great hair day rather than just a really loud outfit.

Is this too much for the office, or would you wear it?

Wear to the Office – Pink and Yellow

I have to admit, as much as I love celebrating a good holiday, a Wednesday celebration is just a bit weird.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take a break from the week anytime, but it just seemed like such a tease.  Anyway, as I return the office,  I decided I would bringhten up my outfit in hopes of brightening up my mood (I’m feeling so lazy)  Thank goodness it’s Friday!

Are you all working today?  Or did you take the day off?

Ooh, we’re taking over Coming Unstitched, come check out our post!  🙂

Wear to the Office – Florals

I scored this beauty during J Crew’s latest sale.  I’ve never bought a J Crew No. 2 Pencil skirt so I was a bit nervous about ordering it online.  As you can see, it’s a perfect fit.  Now I know what all the hoopla is about.  These skirts are perfection!  I should point out that I’m 5’2″ and this is a Petite.

5 Minute Look

I hope it’s not obvious but this look was a combination of my laziest efforts.  There is no outfit that is more versatile and as much of a no-brainer as a DVF wrap dress.  Whenever my brain hurts too much to create a fabulous outfit, I default to one of the DVF wrap dresses that I’ve accumulated over the years.  If you follow us on facebook, you know that Diana and I went to the DVF sample sale a few weeks ago — one of our yearly, sister-bonding traditions.  This year, I was lucky enough to score this fabulous coral and mint printed dress.  So when I got up and realized it was Monday, and that it was cold, and that I was completely uninspired, I turned to this bright dress for comfort.  But the laziness did not stop there folks.  I also employed my laziest hair style — the sock bun. — Great tutorial for that here – from Wendy’s Lookbook.

So, there you have it folks — I hope that even though it was lazy, it worked.  What’s your lazy day regime?

Wear to the Office – Stripes and Green

Hey everyone, we’re baaaaack.   I have some outfit shots to post later on in the week.  For now,  I leave you with today’s work outfit.   This is one of those skirts I only wear in the Spring/Summer time.  I really love it because it just goes with everything.  Oh, and did you notice I finally got a haircut?   Secret, I used to tease the heck out of my crown just to get some volume because it was so long and weighed down.  I finally have some “natural” volume back.

Wear to the Office – Bright pants

Bright pants are a bit tricky for the office.  I wouldn’t recommend them for a very strict business environment.  If you’re office is a bit laid back, here are my tips for wearing bright pants.

First, I would stay away from prints.   Stick to a solid color, blue, green or red (I own them all).  Pair them with a tailored blazer.  I picked a dark blue to add some contrast and to tone down the bright green.  I was considering wearing a white or tan blouse, however I found this top in the back of my closet and loved the monochromatic look it created.   Finish the look with a pair of neutral shoes.   I didn’t wear the necklace or bracelet to the office, a bit too much for me.  I added it later in the day for dinner with friends.

Tell me, would you wear bright pants to the office?

Wear to the Office – Stripes

In an effort not to look like the flag (except in the 4th of July), I like to add a pop of color to my red, white and blue ensembles.

Have a great weekend!
